What I Do: | |
| As Office Manager, I schedule client consultations and appointments for three attorneys, court dates, depositions, travel arrangements, draft documents and file legal documents. I have worked here for 14 years. Every year I learn more and more about the legal field and new laws. My practice deals mostly with family law and some mental health issues. I supervise a paralegal, a law clerk and I train all the new hires in our office. | |
How I Got Here: | |
| I looked in the Daily Law Bulletin and saw a job posting for a Legal Secretary; I applied for the position and was hired. I knew what I wanted, it was that simple! | |
How RMU Helped Me Prepare for my Career: | |
| All of the classes that I took while attending RMU were relevant to legal training, shorthand and legal typing of documents. When I interviewed for my current employer, they liked my resume and the skills I had already mastered. I went to the Carthage, Illinois, location, which was a little bit smaller; therefore, the instructors took a little bit more time to make sure you knew what was going on and that you understood the classwork. My college experience gave me real world training. | |
Advice to Current Students: | |
| I choose RMU because of the reputation the school had as a secretarial school and because the program was completed in a short amount of time. At the beginning of my program, my counselor advised me to change my major and I did not want to. I told myself and my counselor that I was going to complete my degree for what I wanted to do and I did. I got my diploma and my associates. I am much better off today because of it! | |
