What I Do:

I work in the Electronic Recruitment Department at Robert Morris University. I maintain the website overseeing information throughout the almost 800 pages, I create new sections for departments, train them to update their content (using our online content management tool), I create HTML emails to send out (we usually send out between 20,000 to 60,000 emails a month), and I capture web visitor dynamics in order to best plan our online marketing efforts. In my free time, I play music and coach a teenage swim team! (A webmaster is not just limited to a computer:)

How I Got Here:

I got here by having an amazing internship experience!
When I was getting ready to graduate, the college offered an internship opportunity for a CNS student, a Graphic Arts student and a Business eCommerce student. I applied and was accepted, and started working on the new site design.
I was persistent at my duties and was later offered a part-time position which matured into a full-time position.
Moral of the story?
Get internships while you can!

How RMU Helped Me Prepare for my Career:

The applied education I received at RMU was perfect for my career. It allowed me to become acclimated to the world of web design before I was actually out in the job market. I picked up several skills in my HTML classes that I would need to use on a daily basis in my job, while the business classes helped me understand the greater professional landscape that my role is built around.

Advice to Current Students:

Internships Internships Internships!!
I ended my RMU career with a total of 5 internships, and each one brought me closer to professionalism than the last. It’s like learning how to swim with floaties. You get a slow introduction to how the real world works before you’re held responsible for all your actions with a paycheck! Your manager expects you to make mistakes, and then he/she helps you grow : )
