Anderson, DeGroot earn All-American honors as Springfield Eagles advance in USCAA Championships!
Fort Wayne, IN - The Robert Morris-Springfield Volleyball split their pool matches in the opening day of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship Tournament, dropping their first to Rochester College (MI) before defeating the tournament's #1 seed, Florida College. The Springfield Eagles will move into seeded play on Friday, October 24, 2008, on the campus of Taylor University-Fort Wayne.
After defeating Rochester twice during the regular season, RMS came out smoking in the first game, defeating RC 25-12. The Warriors bounced back to sweep the next three games and the match.
With that loss in hand and the #1-seeded and three-time defending national champion Falcons in their sights, the Springfield Eagles may have been excused if they foresaw an early exit from the tournament.
That was not to be, as Coach Mark Moore's charges stepped up to win the first two games of the match 25-20 and 25-13. Showing the class of a champion, FC came back to win the third game in a near wipe-out 25-9. Undeterred by that outcome, RMS took the fourth--and the match--with a 25-14 win.
"Beating a major USCAA power like Florida is a big step for us," said Coach Moore. "We're in only our third year of competition and we've got a chance to make some noise in this tournament."
The Springfield Eagles will face Southern Virginia, the winner of Pool B, in their quarterfinal game on Friday at 11:30 AM EST.
At the national tournament banquet Kristin Anderson (above at left) was named a first-team USCAA All-American, the first in the history of the Springfield Volleyball program. Anderson, a junior from Elkhart, IL, finished second in the nation in kills at 452. She was also ranked 13th in digs with 407.
Casey DeGroot (New Berlin, IL, at right above) earned a spot on the USCAA Academic All-American team for her performance in the classroom and on the court.

Junior Kristie Anderson (Elkhart, IL) was named USCAA Player of the Week for her play against Rochester and UCC with a 65 kill, 38 dig, 10 ace performance in a five-match week; she was also named to three all-tournament teams over the course of the season. "We've played well against some of the other teams in the field," said Coach Mark Moore, in his second season at the helm of the Springfield Eagles. "We can make some noise if we play well over the next couple of days."
The USCAA is the national association dedicated to "leveling the playing field for America's small colleges." The RMC-Springfield Women's Soccer won the USCAA national title in 2007, and the RMS Softball team was national champion in 2006. The Men's & Women's Basketball teams in Springfield are consistently ranked in the USCAA national Top 10.
