Springfield Athletes recognized on 2010 USCAA Post-Season Award Teams!

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - With the conclusion of their Fall National Championships, the USCAA has announced their post-season award teams. Several USCAA Springfield Athletes were recognized for their achievements in the classroom and on the playing field.

2010 USCAA National Academic All-American
Springfield Women's Soccer placed three on the 2010 USCAA National All-Academic Team along with an Honorable Mention All-American. Lauren Care (senior; Springfield, IL), Helena Lafferty (junior; Rochester, IL) and Kristina Hoffart (senior; Calgary, Alberta) were named to the 2010 USCAA National All-Academic Team. This is Hoffart's first recognition as part of the women's soccer program.   Previously, she was a three-time all-academic performer for softball.

2010 USCAA Honorable Mention All-American
Receiving the only nod for an All-American Team, freshman goalkeeper Ava Collins (pictured below - Southeast High School; Springfield, IL) was selected as a 2010 USCAA Honorable Mention All-American. Ava led the USCAA in total saves (171), ranked 3rd with total minutes played (1263) and 3rd in save % (.834) with GK's over 10 games played. Ava was also tied for 2nd in the USCAA in games played (14).

Southeast standout Ava Collins inks LOI with Springfield Lady Eagles!

Springfield, IL - Robert Morris-Springfield Women's Soccer Coach Chris Ryan stayed close to home for his latest signing as Ava Collins, a 2010 Springfield Southeast High School graduate, will ply her trade for the Lady Eagles this fall. 

Collins, named to The State Journal-Register 2010 All-Central State Eight Soccer Team, is a versatile player who scored seven goals and added two assists for the Spartans during her senior campaign. 

"I must have seen Ava utilized in three-to-four different roles for her high school team. Her versatility is one of the things that I like about her as a player, but I also believe Ava has the potential to step into the college game and lay claim to a starting position she can call her own," said Coach Ryan.  

Ava will pursue her Bachelor of Business Administration Degree at the University's Springfield Campus.

Benedictine transfer Amber Leonard-Green opts for Springfield!

Springfield, IL - Robert Morris-Springfield Women's Soccer Coach Chris Ryan added a solid player to his program when Benedictine University in Springfield forward Amber Leonard-Green inked a letter of intent on Tuesday, June 15, 2010.

Leonard-Green, a 2009 graduate of Lutheran High School in Springfield, was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-Region 24 team and the All-Mid-West Athletic Conference team following her freshman season at Benedictine. 

"I'm very pleased to be getting a player of Amber's ability, especially since she seems to be such a good fit into our program," said Coach Ryan. "She's a speedy attacking player who has shown that she can produce at the college level, and I expect she will continue her productivity in an Eagles' uniform."

Amber will pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at the Robert Morris University in Springfield Campus.

Two-sport stand-out Toni Johnson inks double LOI for Springfield Eagles!

Springfield, IL - Robert Morris-Springfield Women's Basketball Head Coach Matt Mead dropped his lure into the basketball rich pool in of nearby Peoria to hook his latest recruit, Peoria High School's Toni Johnson, inked her letter of intent with the Eagles on Thursday, April 15, 2010.

One of the top guards in the area, Toni will provide an immediate impact in the backcourt for the Lady Eagles. As a prep Toni averaged 10 points, five rebounds and four assists per game this past season for Coach Meechie Edwards' PHS Lions.  She was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Mt. Zion Thanksgiving Invitational.  Along with being a three-year starter and two-time captain, she was voted to the Mid-State 6 All-Conference team as a senior and earned honors as the Most Valuable Player of the Kiwanis Senior Girls Basketball Invitational.

"We are excited to have Toni on board for next season and feel she will step in and help us year at the guard position," said Coach Mead about Johnson.  "She is very athletic and has great speed.  Toni is a strong ball handler and shooter who can score in many different ways.  She also excels on the defensive end as she averaged 3 steals per game this year."

In addition to Toni signing her Letter of Intent for basketball, she also signed her Letter of Intent to participate on the women's soccer team at RMU-Springfield.

"Toni had contacted us about playing soccer as well in Springfield.  After speaking with Coach Mead and Randy Sleeth, PHS Girls Soccer Coach, I was excited to see what Toni could bring to the soccer program.  After watching Toni's game, I have no doubt that she will be able to bolster the Lady Eagles soccer attack.  With her speed, Toni should be able to break down quite a few of the defenses we will face this fall," stated RMU-Springfield Head Coach Chris Ryan.

Toni will pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Computer Studies at the Springfield Campus.

Lincoln College defender Sydny Morris signs with Springfield Lady Eagles for 2010!

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Robert Morris University-Springfield Women's Soccer Coach Chris Ryan inked his first letter of intent for the program's 2010 recruiting class with the signing of Lincoln College (IL) defender Sydny Morris on Wednesday, November 25, 2009.

Sydny comes to RMU via Lincoln Community High School and Lincoln College.  A two-year starter for the Lady Lynx at LC, Sydny will provide some instant experience to the women's program.  "We're getting a player that has collegiate experience under her belt," said Coach Ryan (pictured at right with his newest recruit and her mom, Rhonda Morris). "For Lincoln, Sydny played one of the central defensive positions.  I'm anticipating she will be able to provide the same leadership from that position for RMU.  We're very excited to get a student-athlete like Sydny."

Sydny will pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Graphic Design.
