Central Oklahoma continues upset theme, puts away #2 Penn State in OT!
Bensenville, IL - The second quarterfinal of the American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division I National Championship Tournament saw the same result as the first: a top seeded team upended in overtime. This time the victim was #2 Penn State as #10 University of Central Oklahoma pulled off a miracle finish for a 2-1 victory on March 7, 2010, at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, IL.
Trailing 1-0 and the Nittany Lions going all out to kill the clock for the win, UCO defenseman Nick Novak (Green Bay, WI) blasted a shot into the back of the net. Shawn Steggles (Caledonia, MI) got the assist on that game-tying goal with just 1:29 left in regulation.
An unassisted tally 1:42 into extra time from Jonathon Cannizzo (Downers Grove, IL) gave OCU its second straight upset win and propelled them into the national semifinals.
Justin Sgro (Blarsville, PA) stopped 39 Penn State shots to earn the win for the Broncos.
Central Oklahoma advances to the tournament semifinals on Tuesday evening at the Edge. Their opponent will be determined after the four semifinalists are reseeded.
