2007 Season Outlook!

A new era of soccer begins this fall at Robert Morris College.  It will be the first time the men’s and women’s team will be affiliated with the same governing organization, the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

The men’s soccer program, which began in 1998, was a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.  After last year’s season, the men’s program left the NAIA for the USCAA, which represents about 50 small colleges.  The transfer means the men’s soccer program will join six other sports on Robert Morris’ Springfield campus already aligned with the Newport News, Va., association.  At the helm of both programs will be long-time women’s coach Pat Phillips.

Philips will welcome back Dejan Trencevski and Jonathan Perez, seniors who played together at Springfield College in Illinois and Lincoln Land Community College, and Canadian sophomore Anthony Newey.  “We’re treating this season like we’re starting a brand new program,” said Phillips.  “In a lot of ways it really is.”  “The men’s and women’s programs are piggybacking on each other with our schedule, or as much as we can.”  “Our goals this year are simple,” Phillips said.  “We want to get to .500 and make the national tournament.”

Others joining the Eagles this season are John Roegge, a transfer from the University of Illinois at Springfield; SCI players Dale Smith and Mike Morris; freshmen Colton Packingham and brothers Andrew Prince & Mike Price, all from Lanphier; Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Justin Timm; Ryan Umberger from Nokomis; Jeremy Brandt and Anthony Barden, freshmen from St. Louis’ St. John Vianney; and Southeast graduate Colin Wilson, who will be in goal for the Eagles.

Phillips named new head coach!

Patrick Phillips has been named new head men's soccer coach for Robert Morris College in Springfield, IL.  Pat has coached the women's Robert Morris soccer team since 2001, and will also assume control of the men's program heading into the 2007 seasons for both squads.  Joining Pat on his coaching staff will be Chuck Eguez and Kasey Gerding.  Both Chuck and Kasey were coaches in 2006, they will assume larger roles heading into 2007.

Coach Eguez will act as Coach Phillips' Associate Head Coach for both the men's and women's squads assisting with recruitment, scheduling, operating and daily field training sessions.

Coach Gerding will continue to focus his knowledge on the development of the goalkeepers for Robert Morris while also assisting with recruitment and training of the men's team.

"Pat was a solid choice to lead our men's program heading into the USCAA.  His background and success at the USCAA level should pay immediate dividends as I look for Robert Morris to be a competitive force right out-of-the-gate," stated Associate Director of Athletics Chris Ryan.
