Playing back to back games within 24 hours, the Robert Morris Eagles Men's SoccerLorenza Stephens Team picked up two victories by defeating Northland Baptist Bible College at home on Friday in overtime 3-2 and then traveling to Eureka College on Saturday to post a 3-0 shutout.   In RMC's game with Northland Baptist, the Eagles were led by Lorenza Stephens (Sr.-Waukegan ,IL) with 2 goals including the game winner in OT.  Stephens (at right) was assisted by Danny Rodriguez to knot the score at 2-2 and Nate Guzman to seal the victory.  Also contributing for the Eagles were Danny Mendez with the 1st goal of the game with an assist by Geremy Golding.  In Saturday's contest at Eureka College the RMC scoring was spread around with Danny Mendez, Lorenza Stephens and Misael Andrade all finding the net with Geremy Golding and Walter Soliz assisting on the first two goals.  Alex Flores played outstanding in goal for Robert Morris while receiving plenty of support from Nemenja Nenadovic, Daniel Rodriguez, Ian Velasquez and Luis Soliz.  RMC pushed its record to 7-4-2 and will travel to the upper UP this weekend to take on Finlandia University on Saturday Oct. 4.

Eagles Lose Heartbreaker at Aurora!
Alex FloresThe Robert Morris Eagles suffered a tough loss to Aurora University 2-1 played in 90 degree heat this past Sunday afternoon.  Both teams started off quite lethargically with Aurora drawing first blood with a deflected goal that slipped past Alex Flores (Pictured left)with 15 minutes left to play in the 1st half.  RMC countered well late in the first half but was able to score leaving Aurora ahead 1-0.  The Eagles woke up in the second half as Daniel Rodriguez put a great pass on the right foot of Sergio Rea who in turn redirected the ball to Danny MendezMendez proceeded to score and tie the game at 1-1.  RMC had several near misses the rest of the second half as Aurora scored on a penalty kick at the 30 minute mark to close the scoring at 2-1.  RMC dropped to 5-4-2 overall and will host Northland Baptist this Friday at Dugdale Park.

Kickers Battle Carthage for Tie!
Misael AndradeAnother hard fought battle between RMC and Carthage on Weds. resulted in a 1-1 tie.  The game was played in Kenosha, WI under the lights and saw just 8 shots on goal total for both teams in the first half.  Each squad seemed content just to play ball control as neither pressured the ball.  The second half started off pretty much the same pace of play as the first.  But 15 minutes into the second half, both teams started to press forward creating solid scoring opportunities.  At the 25 minute mark, Misael Andrade (pictured left)took the ball to the left side line and cut back toward center striking a 30 yard looping shot just under the crossbar to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  That lead held up until the 2 minute mark when a scramble in front of the RMC goal box produced the tying goal for Carthage.  The Eagles record is now 5-3-2 and will host Bethel College at Dugdale Park Sat. beginning at 4:30 PM.

Eagles Victorious Over RMC Chicago!!!
The meeting of the sister schools from RMC Lake County and RMC Chicago Nemanja Nenadovicproduced a lot of offense and a 4-2 victory for Lake County.  The game was played on a very hot steamy late afternoon at Dugdale Park, Waukegan.  The Eagles from LC managed 18 shots on goal to Chicago's 5 in the 1st half though the score was knotted at 1-1 at intermission. Sergio Rea headed in a pass from Geremy Golding for LC's goal in the 1st half.  The 2nd half saw Chicago take an early 2-1 lead before LC countered with another goal by Rea.  Danny Mendez gave LC the lead for good on great run and pass in the box from Golding to go up 3-2.  Both teams continued to push the ball forward with great midfield control the rest of the game.  Nemenja Nenadovic (at right) played a strong game from center mid defensive position and made a pass to his center mid partner Misael Andrade who in turn beat the Chicago goalie with a looping 30 yarder from the left side to end the scoring at 4-2.  The Eagles will travel to RMC Springfield on Saturday for their next competition.

Eagles Shutout CLC!!!!
Jose ReaThe results of the sixth meeting between Robert Morris College and the College of Lake County were no different than the previous five contests as the Eagles won their 3rd game of the year defeating the Lancers by a 2-0 margin.  Playing without several injured players, RMC 's strategy was to control play out of the back and look for attack opportunities from the wings.  The Eagles managed to take advantage of a series of nice passes on the left side ending with a beautiful floating feed from Walter Soliz to Gerardo Mejia to open up the scoring.  Mejia struck a beautiful one touch volley that beat the CLC goalie at the 15 minute mark.  Ten minutes later Sergio Rea(at left) headed in a deflection from Danny Mendez to give RMC a 2-0 lead which ended the scoring.  The second half found no scoring with the Eagles thwarting many CLC scoring opportunities.  Robert Morris improved its record to 3-2-1 for the season and hosts RMC Chicago JV for their next competition.

Walter SolizAndrade Leads Eagles Over Benedictine!!!
With just 15 minutes to go in a scoreless game, Misael Andrade hit a looping 30 yard shot just under the crossbar to give the RMC Eagles a 1-0 victory over Benedictine U. on Weds. Aug 27 at Dugdale Park, Waukegan.  Robert Morris improved their record to 2-2-1 for the year.  The game saw a lot of solid ball movement early on with RMC besting BU 8 shots to 5 to end the 1st period 0-0.  However, play bogged down in the 2nd half until the Eagles found some good attack from the outside midfield play of Walter Soliz (at right) who put up five shots by himself to keep the BU goalie busy.  Soliz was supported by the midfield play of Nemeja Nenedovic who filled from his normal goalie slot while RMC was shorthanded.  In previous games played earlier this week the Eagles played to a scoreless tie at Wisconsin Lutheran and lost a tough 3-2 decision in a scrimmage with the U. of St. Francis.  RMC will travel the College of Lake County on Fri. evening for a scrimmage game.

Kickers Notch 1st Win!!!

Eagles Win Second National Title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rochester, MI - The Robert Morris-Lake County Men's Soccer team claimed its second national title in four years, defeating the Pioneers of Columbia Union College (MD) 2-1 in overtime in the championship game of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Tournament on November 2, 2007, at Stony Creek Athletic Fields in Rochester, MI.

The final was a classic match-up between the quick-strike, long-ball offense of the #1-seeded Pioneers and the ball control favored by the second-ranked Lake County Eagles.  Both teams had few chances in the early going, but RMC struck first to take a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles earned their tally when Lorenza Stephens (Junior, Waukegan, IL) played a perfect through ball to Danny Mendez sprinting into the box.  The senior from Zion, IL, was left alone on the naked Pioneer goalie, and he toed the ball into the net just inside the far post.

The celebration that followed that goal was short-lived.  The Pioneers answered off the immediate kick-off, catching the Eagles flat-footed.  A long pass over the RMC backline found the head of a CUC forward, who then volleyed it past RMC's All-American goalkeeper Alex Flores (Sophomore, Waukegan, IL), evening the score at 1-all.

Both teams pressed the issue, but neither could score and the first half ended with the tie score.

RMC played an aggressive game in the second stanza, creating several great opportunities.  Three shots hit the crossbar but none took the lucky bounce into the net.  CUC mounted a

Few counter attacks but could not manage no shots on goal.  The ninety minutes of regulation ended with the score knotted at 1-all.

That prompted golden goal overtime: the first team to score would take the game and the national title.  The Eagles took control immediate, forcing the attack in the first minutes of overtime.

The third wave paid off as Brad Earnest (Sophomore, Zion, IL) played a great pass through to Scott Malagon (Junior, Park City, IL-at left).  The three-time All-American (pictured at left) chested the ball to his left foot and rocketed a volley that shot past the CUC goalie for the win.

"It's hard to single out any player," said RMC Head Coach Rommel Guzman.  "This win was truly a team effort."

The Eagles' defense held its tournament opponents to just three goals.  The backline--led by All-American Gerardo Mejia (Sophomore, Niles, IL)--limited the shots on goal fellow All-American goalie Alex Flores had to handle.   Defenders Eddie Lopez (Senior, Waukegan, IL), Brad Earnest, and Joey Beshel (Freshman, Evanston, IL) played well in the windy conditions of day one and then almost shut-out the potent offenses of semi-final opponent Walla Walla University (WA) and CUC.  Senior defender Everado Reyes (Posen, IL), a season-long starter, played in the opening game before suffering an injury.

"Our midfielders helped reign in the pressure on our backline," Coach Guzman (pictured at right) added.  "They had excellent ball control the whole tournament."

Led by senior Sylvio Mejia (Waukegan, IL), that group--two-time Academic All-American Jose Gavilanes (Senior, Northlake, IL, pictured above at right), All-American Ian Velasquez (Freshman, Waukegan, IL), and Lorenza Stephens--set up combinations to keep pressure on their opponents.

"But we have to score to win," Coach Guzman said.  His talented forward line of All-American Scott Malagon, Luis Patlan (Freshman, Zion, IL), and Danny Mendez tallied most of RMC's twelve goals in the three-game series.

Three seniors Sylvio Mejia, Eddie Lopez, and Jose Gavilanes won All-Tournament honors. Gavilanes was named Tournament MVP, capping an excellent career on the field and in the classroom.

The Lake County Eagles ended its season with a record season of 18-4, and a second national championship in four years.  With Coach Guzman at the helm the last three years, the team's record is  59-11-4.  his team's have appeared in the national tournament each season, taking a third and a second in addition to this year's championship.

"We're graduating some great players," said Coach Guzman.  "These are guys that won a national championship as freshman and then repeated when they were seniors.  We're going to have to work awfully hard to replace them."

RMC will hold evaluations for players interested in joining the Eagles at the Lake County Sports Center in Waukegan, IL, during January and February 2008.  Contact Coach Guzman for more information.

Congratulations to Coach Guzman, Coach Sultan and the RMC Lake County Men's Soccer Team for an outstanding achievement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!           Jose Gavilanes                           Eddie Lopez

Eagles Advance to Title Game!!!!

Rochester, MI - The Robert Morris-Lake County Men's Soccer team will play for its second United State Collegiate Athletic Association national championship on Friday, November 2, 2007, at 2:00 PM.  The Lake County Eagles will face Columbia Union College (MD) in the title game after wins in the first two rounds of play at the Stony Creek Athletic Fields in Rochester, MI.

RMC-LC posted a convincing win in their quarterfinal game, defeating Andrews University (MI) 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

The game was played under conditions that tested both teams as winds gusted up to 35 miles per hour.

The #2-seeded Eagles struck just two minutes into the game when Luis Patlan (Freshman, Zion, IL) picked off an Andrews clearing attempt in the box and punched the ball into the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead.

With the wind in their faces, the RMC-LC defense forced to back up on every long pass. In the 25th minute, a high bouncing ball got behind the back line leaving All-American goalkeeper Alex Flores (Sophomore, Waukegan, IL) one-on-one with the Andrews' attacker.  Flores made two great stops on the initial thrust, but Andrews managed to sneak a deflection over the line to knot the score at one-all.

The Eagles had a number of good chances but could not retake the lead until the 38th minute when a pair of first-team All-Americans hooked up for a score.  Scott Malagon (Junior, Park City, IL), a three-time USCAA AA selection, found the net off a razor-sharp feed from two-timer Gerardo Mejia (Sophomore, Niles, IL).  That score stood up for 2-1 edge at the break for Robert Morris.

The second half RMC had the wind at their backs and took every advantage.  The defense only allowed three shots by Andrews in the second half, none of them offering tough chances for the Eagles' goalie tandem of Flores and Rafael Robledo (Senior, Chicago, IL).  Excellent ball control in the mid-field by two-time USCAA Academic All-American Jose Gavilanes (Senior, Northlake, IL), Ruben Chavez (Freshman, Chicago, IL), All-American Ian Velasquez (Freshman, Waukegan, IL), and Luis Soiz (Sophomore, Chicago, IL) played a major role both offensively and defensively.

Six minutes into the second half, Danny Mendez (Senior, Zion, IL) centered a ball from the left corner to the far post where Malagon pin-pointed a beautiful volley over the Andrews' goalie for his second goal of the game.  A few minutes later, Lorenza Stephens (Junior, Waukegan, IL) boosted RMC's lead to 4-1 off a nice pass from Sylvio Mejia (Senior, Waukegan, IL).

Mendez teamed up with Patlan for the final goal of the game with about thirteen minutes remaining.  RMC continued to pepper the Andrews goalie with shots, but these attempts to score came to no avail.

Excellent defense by the back line of Eddie Lopez (Senior, Waukegan, IL), Gerardo Mejia, Joey Beshel (Freshman, Evanston, IL), and Brad Earnest (Sophomore, Zion, IL) held Andrews to but eight shots the entire game with Flores and Robledo having to make just five saves.

In the semifinals on Thursday, the Eagles took on the #3-seeded Wolves of Walla Walla University (WA), coming away with a win by the same 5-1 final score.

Much as he had against Andrews, Luis Patlan got his team started with a quick goal just two minutes into the opening period.  The freshman midfielder picked off a pass from the WWU defense, then hammered a difficult wrap-around shot past the Wolves' goalie.

He wasn't done yet.  A few minutes later, Scott Malagon slipped a nice pass to Patlan deep in the WWU box and he toed it into the back of the net for his second goal.  With a 2-0 lead, RMC continued to control the mid-field.  Even though they had a number of offensive chances, the Eagles could not tally any additional goals before the end of the first.

RMC's Jose Gavilanes--supported by Ian Velasquez, Lorenza Stephens, and Sylvio Mejia--continued to exert control over the midfield.  After an excellent combination, Stephens had control near the the right sideline.  He launched a centering pass that Malagon gathered in for a well-placed shot to give the Eagles a three-goal lead.

RMC continue to control the pace of the game, holding the Wolves to a precious few shots.  After an unsuccessful thrust by WWU, an RMC counter attack ended in a WWU foul.  Jose Gavilanes took the resulting direct free kick at the left corner of the box.  His perfectly placed shot over the defensive wall arched into the goal at the near post to lift RMC's lead to 4-0.

With only four minutes remaining, Francisco Lopez (Junior, Vernon Hills, IL) took a pass from

Eddie Lopez and one touched it past the WWC goalie for a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Wolves spoiled the shut-out with just 26 seconds left on the clock, WWC got a ball deep in the RMC corner.  A Wolves player retrieved it and put up a shot at a seemingly impossible angle that strung along the crossbar, skipping into the net at the far post.  That consolation goal made for 5-1 final.

RMC, the 2004 USCAA National Champions, will now take on the #1 seed, Columbia Union College (MD) in the title game at 2:00 PM Friday, November 2, 2007

Eagles Soccer off to Strong Start!!!
The Robert Morris College Eagles Soccer Team opened up its 2007 soccer season in quest for a National Championship that averted them in overtime in last year's final by tying The Scottie MalagonUniversity of St. Francis 1-1 and beating Oakton CC 2-1 over the weekend.  The Eagles who are once again coached by Rommel Guzman and assisted by Bill Sultan played a hard fought defensive game against a solid St. Francis squad.  Scottie Malagon (at left) scored late in the first half from 20 yards out on an assist from Brad Earnest to give the Eagles a 1-0 halftime lead.  The Saints from St. Francis tied score late in the contest to end the scoring at 1-1.  Even though RMC placed significant pressure on the Saint's goalie for the duration of the game, the Eagles had to settle for the tie.
In the win over Oakton, RMC rallied after falling Danny Mendezbehind 1-0 when Oakton converted a penalty kick after a hand ball was called on the Eagles in the box.  Robert Morris proceeded to tie the game shortly after the Oakton score on a goal from Scottie Malagon assisted by Jose Gavilanes.  With rain hampering play most of the game, some dangerous errors put both goalies under a lot of pressure. However, the adept goaltending of Alex Flores and Rafael Robledo  kept RMC's net empty for the remainder of the game.  With about 13 minutes left in the contest, Danny Mendez (at right) sent home the game winner with an assist from Joey Beschel.  The Eagles will travel to Marian College (Fondulac, WI) Weds.
