Five Eagles Earn NAIA All-American Academic Honors!!!!!!!
Waukegan, IL - Five Robert Morris golfers were among those honored as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes when the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced its Spring 2008 Academic All-Americans.
NAIA Scholar-Athletes must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and be of junior or senior academic status. Last season, the RMU Men's Golf team held the highest overall GPA of any team in any sport in the NAIA with five members of the team earning Scholar-Athlete status.
This year, Robert Morris was among a quartet of schools placing four golfers each on the list of Academic All-Americans. Those institutions included Johnson & Wales University (FL), Ohio Dominican, and Region VII-rival St. Ambrose University (IA). Only 94 male golfers earned this distinction.
Chris Myers (Zion, IL) closed out a great season on the links that saw him earn All-Conference and All-Region VII honors for the third time with Scholar-Athlete accolades for the second straight year. Fellow seniors Herving Sanchez (Round Lake, IL) and Jason Ratzburg (Kenosha, WI) joined Myers as repeat selections.
Junior Erik Lindgren (Byron, IL) was cited in his first season of eligibility for the award. He follows in the footsteps of his sister, Brittany, a 2007 RMU grad. She was twice a Scholar-Athlete during her career on the Lady Eagles Golf team.
Sandy Spaniak earned recognition as a Scholar-Athlete for the second straight year. The senior from Gages Lake, IL, ends her RMU golfing career as one of only 94 honorees from 56 different NAIA schools.
"These honors are a testament to the dedication of these young people," said RMU Women's Golf Coach Bob Franz. "It's a challenge to compete at a high level athletically while maintaining the same quality of performance in the classroom."
Over the last four years over one-hundred Eagle athletes have earned Academic All-American honors from one of the various national associations under whose auspices the College competes.
Robert Morris is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and competes in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles field teams in twenty-one men's and women's sports.
