Eagles add 16 baseball players for 07-08 season!
State Journal-Register
Robert Morris-Springfield has signed 16 baseball recruits for the 2007-2008 season, including four from NJCAA Region 24 champion Springfield College in Illinois. Three of the four SCI players were from the Central State Eight Conference, and the Eagles added four other players who played high school ball in the CS8.
“We recruited another talented group of athletes this year,” 2nd year Robert Morris Head Coach Mark Rabideau said. “This class complements very well the returning players from our first year of competition.”
SCI transfers, who played in the CS8, include starting pitcher Billy DeRosa from Chatham Glenwood, Jason Thomas from Southeast and Clark Miller from Lanphier (who graduated in 2002 from LHS and in ’05 from SCI), and Justin Standridge, a pitcher who played at Ursuline Academy. Other Robert Morris signees who played in the CS8 include hard-nosed junior catcher Brian Colston, a transfer from Illinois College who played at Springfield High,
Taylorville center fielder Ryan Butcher, who attended Illinois State as a freshman last year, and freshman Bryan Fredrich, who played at Lanphier last year.
Other players from the area are Brandon Boston from Auburn and 6-foot-1, 210-pound freshman Josh Jouett, who hit .420 with nine homers and 36 runs batted in as a first baseman at Williamsville last season. “I looked at Lincoln Land and talked to SCI, but Robert Morris showed the most interest,” Jouett said of his decision to play for the Eagles. “I’m looking forward to playing for coach Rabideau. He liked that I can hit pretty good, and I’ll throw my body in front of anything.”
The other six signees are freshmen: Decatur Eisenhower graduates Jeremy Finch and Ricky Gilman (both infielders/pitchers) and Matt Runyon (catcher); Mount Zion’s Joey Fortner (pitcher/first baseman) and Nick Trimby (outfielder); and LeRoy’s Garrett Moyer (short-stop).
“We have added depth at virtually every position, which will aid us in game strategy which we were unable to do this past spring,” Rabideau said. “Primarily, we’ve added depth to our pitching staff and our catching corps. These two areas were the No.1 targets of this class.
DeRosa, at 5’7” & 150lbs., finished his two-year career at SCI with a 10-5 record, including going 5-4 his sophomore season. His last collegiate win was against Danville to propel the Bulldogs into the Region 24 title game. “Robert Morris is a good fit and allows me to stay around town,” said DeRosa, who said he also drew interest from Blackburn College. “It’s exciting to help build this program, and I think we’ll be pretty good.” Butcher was a leadoff hitter for the Tornadoes his senior season when he hit .348 and stole 30 bases. After attending ISU, he realized how much he missed baseball. “I knew I had the ability to play, and I was looking for a place to play,” said the 6-foot-2, 165-pound Butcher. “Robert Morris recruited me at Taylorville. I figured I owed them something.”
